2%3A%22Schmidtlein%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22Purpose%3A%20This%20work%20describes%20PETSTEP%20%28PET%20Simulator%20of%20Tracers%20via%20Emission%20Projection%29%3A%20a%20faster%20and%20more%20accessible%20alternative%20to%20Monte%20Carlo%20%28MC%29%20simulation%20generating%20realistic%20PET%20images%2C%20for%20studies%20assessing%20image%20features%20and%20segmentation%20techniques.%5CnMethods%3A%20PETSTEP%20was%20implemented%20within%20Matlab%20as%20open%20source%20software.%20It%20allows%20generating%20threedimensional%20PET%20images%20from%20PET%5C%2FCT%20data%20or%20synthetic%20CT%20and%20PET%20maps%2C%20with%20user-drawn%20lesions%20and%20user-set%20acquisition%20and%20reconstruction%20parameters.%20PETSTEP%20was%20used%20to%20reproduce%20images%20of%20the%20NEMA%20body%20phantom%20acquired%20on%20a%20GE%20Discovery%20690%20PET%5C%2FCT%20scanner%2C%20and%20simulated%20with%20MC%20for%20the%20GE%20Discovery%20LS%20scanner%2C%20and%20to%20generate%20realistic%20Head%20and%20Neck%20scans.%20Finally%20the%20sensitivity%20%28S%29%20and%20Positive%20Predictive%20Value%20%28PPV%29%20of%20three%20automatic%20segmentation%20methods%20were%20compared%20when%20applied%20to%20the%20scanner-acquired%20and%20PETSTEP-simulated%20NEMA%20images.%5CnResults%3A%20PETSTEP%20produced%203D%20phantom%20and%20clinical%20images%20within%204%20and%206%20min%20respectively%20on%20a%20single%20core%202.7%20GHz%20computer.%20PETSTEP%20images%20of%20the%20NEMA%20phantom%20had%20mean%20intensities%20within%202%25%20of%20the%20scanner-acquired%20image%20for%20both%20background%20and%20largest%20insert%2C%20and%2016%25%20larger%20background%20Full%20Width%20at%20Half%20Maximum.%20Similar%20results%20were%20obtained%20when%20comparing%20PETSTEP%20images%20to%20MC%20simulated%20data.%20The%20S%20and%20PPV%20obtained%20with%20simulated%20phantom%20images%20were%20statistically%20signi%5Cufb01cantly%20lower%20than%20for%20the%20original%20images%2C%20but%20led%20to%20the%20same%20conclusions%20with%20respect%20to%20the%20evaluated%20segmentation%20methods.%5CnConclusions%3A%20PETSTEP%20allows%20fast%20simulation%20of%20synthetic%20images%20reproducing%20scanner-acquired%20PET%20data%20and%20shows%20great%20promise%20for%20the%20evaluation%20of%20PET%20segmentation%20methods.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%2212%5C%2F2015%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22en%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1016%5C%2Fj.ejmp.2015.07.139%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%2211201797%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%5C%2Fretrieve%5C%2Fpii%5C%2FS1120179715003130%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22GSDRE8AN%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222022-02-22T18%3A02%3A25Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
